Quantitative Air-Fuel Mixing Measurements for Spray Combustion

  • In direct-injection engines, air-fuel mixing strongly impacts engine efficiency and emissions formation, but few quantitative measurements have been achieved, especially for regions near the liquid spray. The high-pressure and temperature multiphase flow environment presents significant challenges for most optical diagnostic techniques.
  • We are developing a 2-wavelength extinction imaging diagnostic to quantify time-resolved air-fuel mixing in diesel sprays.
  • Simultaneous measurements of liquid spray regions and the air-fuel ratio field will enable detailed study of near-injector mixing processes.
